A 2014 Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Foundation grant recipient, Independence Center provides a comprehensive system of high quality programs and services that assists adults in the St. Louis metropolitan area with serious and persistent mental illnesses to live and work in the community, independently and with dignity. The Center promotes rehabilitation and employment, provides educational, social and housing opportunities and offers training in its approach to community based care.

In the year Independence Center received funding from The Sidney R. Baer, Jr. Foundation, 127 of their members participated in Independence Center’s education program where they received guidance in determining and setting educational goals and areas of interest. 93 of these members received coaching and individualized support in the areas of school selection, financial aid, paperwork completion, enhancing study habits, and advocation for themselves with school and financial aid personnel. 23 Independence Center embers worked closely with staff and other members on basic education skills including literacy and GED courses. Another 10 members received a scholarship and a total of 14 scholarships were awarded. 36% of member participating in the education program were enrolled in community college or trade school pursuing a college degree or enhancing skills already obtained through post-secondary education. Additionally, Independence Center was able to connect with nearly 30 different educational institutions in the area to further support their members.

Overall, receiving The Sidney R. Baer Foundation grant allowed Independence Center members to move towards community engagement and greater self-sufficiency by increasing their education outcomes!

Who is qualified to apply for a grant?

Qualifying organizations must have tax-exempt status under IRS sections 501(c)(3) and 509(a)(1) or 509(a)(2). They must agree to expend no more than seven percent of the received fund on the organization’s administrative expenses and the primary focus of the application should be programs concentrating on schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

Do I need to submit a letter of intent?

Yes. Only after submitting a letter of intent will an applicant be invited to officially apply for a grant via our Foundant online portal. LOIs will be accepted November 1st through March 1st. Please visit our GRANTS page for more information on our LOI and grant submission process.
